The importance of usability in today’s web world

Monday, August 24th, 2009

When’s the last time you found yourself clicking endlessly through a seemingly infinite amount of pages on a website, only to find you end up right where you started? It happens all the time. You go to a website with a specific goal in mind and if you can’t fulfill that goal in a reasonable amount of time, you move on to another website. Web usability is a hugely important factor in the success of a website. The faster and more efficient a user can be on your site, the more likely they are to return.

Let’s face it, user’s come to your site for one thing and one thing only, content. They’ve found your site through whatever means and are now there to fulfill their needs as efficiently and effectively as possible. You can have the most beautiful site in existence, but if the information the user seeks is not within a few clicks, chances are they wont return. When it comes to creating content for your website, there are several important factors to remember:

Abridged content works the best. Studies show that it takes about 25% less time to read a physical piece of paper than it does to read that same text on a computer screen. In this sense, use about half the text as you would if you were writing content on paper. People don’t have all day to sit around and read your type, keep it short and to the point.

Make it sound professional. Avoid spelling and grammar mistakes at all costs. Use the tools you have available to you: spell check, grammar check and take full advantage of them. There is no excuse for having content full of broken english and misspelled words. Proof read before you upload any content, then send it to someone else to proof read again. It gives your company a negative image and may avert users from doing business with you.

Use header tags and lists to make your content easily scannable. You don’t want a user to be overwhelmed by a wall of text when they arrive at your site. If you highlight important points and keywords, they can find exactly the information they are looking for in a much shorter amount of time.

Know who your target market is. If your marketing towards professionals, than feel free to write using the professional jargon that they come expecting. However, if your marketing services towards your average joe, make sure even the most inexperienced of users can understand what it is your offering.

A close second to the importance of your content is the actual design aspect of your website. You can’t deny the appeal of a good looking website. This combined with well written content can be an unbeatable combo.

Keep your loading times short. No one wants to wait five minutes for a site to load only to experience the horror of a three minute intro loaded with techno/trance music and flashy effects with a button to enter the site. Why would someone want to go to your website only to have to click a button to enter your site? It makes no sense from a usability stand point.

Web usability isn’t a difficult concept to grasp. Take some time to visit your competitors websites and see what it is that separates you from them. Does their site load slower or faster? Do they have professionally written content or blocks of hard to read text all over the place? Take notes and improve upon your existing website until you are confident that it will provide a good user experience.

Dempsey Graphics designs all of its clients websites with usability in mind. We know what it takes and are confident that we can provide a positive user experience for all of their users. Feel free to contact us at (702) 837-1127 and setup an appointment to go over your current website for usability issues or talk to us about getting a brand new website for your business.

Internet marketing, how important is it for your business?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Success in the online world is more than a good looking, fast loading website. Even the least appealing of sites will get more business than a well designed site if they have a better online marketing strategy. A business without a successful web presence is losing millions of potential customers. The web is rapidly replacing all forms of popular advertising

The majority of business owners are more than willing to put out thousands of dollars to have a decent website created for their company. So why is it that they almost completely neglect the marketing aspect of their website? You wouldn’t buy a billboard on a street with no traffic, would you? Internet marketing is not only one of the most effective forms of advertising, it is also one of the cheapest. A website without marketing will only be found by those that know it exists. How many potential leads are you losing by not advertising online? Internet marketing is essentially the most effective marketing tool for a business, so why ignore it?

According to recent studies, around 49% of search engine users will change their search term if they don’t find the results they are looking for on the first page. Only 8% of search engine users actually look past the 3rd page. The large majority of internet users believe that the top ranking searches for any particular keyword are the leaders in that field. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they are the best, but to someone who doesn’t know any better, they are. Just remember, your average internet user isn’t an SEO specialist or online marketer. Rankings, number of back-links, domain age, none of this means anything to them. They see a website on the top of the rankings and, to them, this is the best company in that particular field. Now are you starting to see the importance of internet marketing for your company.

In short, having a website that is difficult to find is just as bad as not having a website in the first place. If you are neglecting online marketing, you risk losing a potentially large customer base. Every day your competitors rank better than you on the search engines, is a day that they acquire your customers. Internet marketing is something that cannot be ignored in this day and age.

Dempsey Graphics have been marketing online for over 10 years. We know what it takes to get your company found on the internet. If your business is in dire need of internet marketing, please feel free to contact us at (702) 837-1127.

Keeping up with the times (and google), Seo talk

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

SEO is one of the most notoriously confusing and ever changing fields of internet marketing. Some claim to know how to get front page rankings in a month. Almost no-one (even the vast majority of Google’s own employees) know all the secrets behind G’s own magical algorithm. SEO is a constantly evolving and continuous process that takes time, effort and most of all patience. Keeping up with changes in Googles systems and algorithms is an imperative part of every SEO specialist’s life. Here is a look at how SEO has changed over the past couple years and how SEO companies are racing to keep up.

There are many techniques sworn by in the past that are almost entirely obsolete today. Meta tags stuffed with loads of keywords were an all to common occurrence just a few years ago. These days they play very little importance in your overall ranking and should only contain a few of your main keywords or relative information. Another dying technique is manual submission of your URL to the actual search engines themselves. Nowadays you don’t have to bother, in fact, it almost works against you. The indexing of sites happens automatically within a couple of weeks. Directory submission (although slowly creeping towards becoming obsolete) is still done today as a link building technique. All SEO companies used to follow the same basic set of steps and techniques. Now, this kind of standardized take is defunct because each website needs a different SEO approach applied to it.

SEO is almost entirely natural these days. Meaning if your site has relative content, decent links and valid code, it will more than likely rank for a particular keyword. However, there are definitely still legitimate techniques that can help speed up the process and return better results. Finding a legitimate SEO company is like finding a needle in a haystack. Most offer exorbitant amounts of empty promises of “thousands of keyword rankings” or “submission to millions of (non-exsistent) search engines”, yet very few have the results to back it up. Generally speaking, the greater promises and shorter time you are offered, the farther away you steer from a legitimate SEO company. As with everything else in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

SEO is a constantly changing field. Successful SEO companies need to be flexible enough to continuously change with the times. Dempsey Graphics have been in the business for over 10 years and know the web inside and out. If you would like to setup a meeting with us for an SEO consultancy or other service, please feel free to use our contact form or call us at (702) 837-1127.
